Flex budgeting on monarch
Flex Budgeting is a simpler alternative to traditional budgeting. Instead of tracking every spending category separately, you organize everything into three buckets. Less noise, more clarity.
The Three Buckets
Fixed Expenses are your predictable monthly costs — rent, utilities, insurance, subscriptions. Set one number for the total and monitor it as a group.
Non-Monthly Expenses cover costs that don't come every month but aren't surprises either — annual premiums, holiday gifts, car maintenance. I use Monarch's rollover feature to set aside a little each month so the money's there when the bill arrives.
Flex Expenses are everything variable — groceries, dining out, shopping, entertainment. Instead of giving each category its own budget, I track all of them against one single number. That's the core of the whole system.
Why It Works
I'm not comparing myself against 20+ categories every week. There's just one question: did my flexible spending stay within the limit? I can still drill into specific categories if I want to see where the money went, but I don't have to. The pressure of micro-managing every line item goes away.
What to Know About Flexibility
You can move money between buckets as life changes
It works well with variable income
If you ever want to switch back to traditional category budgeting, your settings are preserved
The Bottom Line
Flex Budgeting trades precision for simplicity. It won't tell you exactly how much you spent on coffee last Tuesday — but it will tell you whether you're living within your means. For most people, that's the part that actually matters.
